The ePlane Company, a Chennai-based electric aircraft startup, has signed a non-binding agreement to supply 788 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air ambulances in a deal valued at over $1 billion. The company will provide these aircraft to ICATT, an air ambulance service provider, which aims to deploy them across all districts in India.
Backed by investors like Speciale Invest, The ePlane Company has raised $20 million to date. Founded in 2019 by aerospace engineer Satya Chakravarthy, the startup specializes in designing and manufacturing electric flying taxis and aircraft.
Transforming Air Ambulance Services
eVTOLs are battery-powered aircraft designed for vertical takeoff and landing, enabling them to bypass traffic congestion and offer rapid transportation solutions. Initially, ePlane will develop three ambulance prototypes, each accommodating a pilot, a paramedic, and a patient with a stretcher.
The company plans to begin commercial operations in the latter half of 2026, with an initial production capacity of 100 units per year. The aircraft will have an initial range of 110 kilometers (68.4 miles), with the potential to exceed 200 kilometers over time.
India’s Growing eVTOL Market
India’s eVTOL sector is expanding, with players such as Archer Aviation and Sarla Aviation also developing electric aircraft solutions. The ePlane Company aims to carve a niche in both air taxi and cargo transport, with its AI-powered, two-seater electric flying vehicles designed for urban mobility.
By leveraging cutting-edge aviation technology, ePlane is set to revolutionize emergency medical services and urban air transportation, positioning itself as a key player in the future of sustainable aviation.
