Chennai-based spacetech startup OrbitAID has raised $1.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Unicorn India Ventures, with additional support from TANSIM (Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission).
The funding will accelerate OrbitAID’s vision of advancing sustainable space operations by enabling innovative on-orbit refuelling and docking solutions. The capital will be directed toward:
- Conducting an in-space demonstration of docking and refuelling operations.
- Expanding facilities for on-orbit servicing operations.
- Advancing the Standard Interface Docking and Refueling Port (SIDRP)to commercial readiness.
- Scaling up team capabilities to support future projects.
A Vision for Sustainable Space Operations
Founded in 2021 by Sakthikumar R, Nikhil Balasubramanian, and Mano Balaji, OrbitAID is at the forefront of creating a network of in-space fuel stations, strategically positioned across various orbits. These stations aim to support the growing demand for sustainable satellite operations and long-term space missions.
The startup recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing its patented SIDRP on a zero-gravity flight in Florida. This technology has now reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, showcasing its viability in docking and refuelling scenarios. Over the past year, OrbitAID has secured key partnerships and collaborations, bolstering its position in the space tech ecosystem.
Driving Innovation in Space
OrbitAID’s efforts represent a shift toward sustainable practices in space, reducing satellite obsolescence and enabling cost-effective operations. With the successful funding round, the company is set to pioneer the commercialization of on-orbit servicing, a crucial step toward building resilient and efficient space infrastructure.
The startup’s advancements have not only highlighted India’s capabilities in the global space tech arena but also aligned with the broader goal of fostering innovation in the space industry.
