From Law to Loom: Madhuri Aggarwal’s Journey with Weaves of Tradition

Date:

Introduction

In the vibrant world of startups, where innovation and resilience often walk hand in hand, Madhuri Aggarwal stands out as a beacon of creativity and determination. Founder of Weaves of Tradition, a direct-to-consumer fashion brand celebrating Indian handloom, Madhuri has successfully transitioned from a legal career to becoming an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. In a recent conversation with R. Chandra, Madhuri shared her inspiring journey, the challenges of bridging tradition with modernity, and her vision for promoting Indian crafts on a global stage.

The Startup Landscape: Insights from Madhuri and R. Chandra

The discussion kicked off with a broader look at the startup ecosystem. While Bangalore is known as India’s tech hub, Gurgaon has emerged as a leading center for startups, thanks to its dynamic entrepreneurial environment. R. Chandra, Editor-in-Chief of one of the top six digital media platforms for startups, emphasized the importance of sharing founder stories to foster inspiration and community support. Madhuri echoed these sentiments, pointing out that the entrepreneurial journey often feels lonely, and shared stories can help bridge that gap.

A Journey from Law to Weaves of Tradition

Madhuri’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion. After earning an MBA, she faced a challenging job market, enduring a three-year-long job search that shook her confidence. With encouragement from family and friends, she turned to her lifelong interest in fashion and pursued a styling course, setting the stage for her entrepreneurial foray.

In 2017, amidst the demands of motherhood, she founded Weaves of Tradition, an endeavor rooted in celebrating Indian craftsmanship. “I started Weaves of Tradition when my baby was 3 months old. It was probably the most exhausting and yet the most confidence-building stage of my journey. It is a testament to the fact that as human beings, we are naturally resilient and strong. Sometimes we just need life experiences to give us that push to take chances,” Madhuri shared. Her story stands as an inspiring example for more women to take the step towards entrepreneurship.

Navigating the Challenges of Building a Brand

The early days of Weaves of Tradition were fraught with challenges. Convincing artisans to embrace e-commerce and building trust with craftspeople were significant hurdles. Many artisans were skeptical about online sales, fearing it wouldn’t translate into fair compensation or sustainable partnerships. Madhuri persevered, learning about the nuances of Indian crafts and creating a direct-to-consumer model that prioritized fair practices and timely payments. Today, Weaves of Tradition collaborates with a diverse network of skilled artisans, helping them showcase their talent on a global platform.

Promoting Sustainability and Authenticity

Weaves of Tradition is more than just a brand; it’s a mission to bring authentic, sustainable Indian crafts to the world. Madhuri highlighted the inherent sustainability of Indian crafts and emphasized the need for contemporary design sensibilities to cater to global markets. “I think the most important part of Weaves of Tradition going forward, as also its vision and mission, is going to be to make sure that Indian crafts are developed with a more contemporary take on design and prints while keeping the core aspects of hand weaving, natural dyeing, and natural organic textile at its base. This is what will help Indian crafts not just to be adopted all over the world but also to grow in terms of revenue and livelihoods,” she explained.

Adapting to Market Trends

Post-COVID, the fashion landscape has undergone a dramatic shift, with younger generations favoring relaxed and bold designs over traditional attire. Madhuri shared her challenges in keeping up with these changing preferences, noting unsold stock of traditional sarees as a learning curve. To address these shifts, Weaves of Tradition is now expanding into ready-to-wear items and home linen, aiming to strike a balance between affordability and premium offerings.

A Digital-First Approach with Future Aspirations

From its inception, Weaves of Tradition has operated as a digital-first brand, leveraging e-commerce to reach its audience. Madhuri is now exploring an omnichannel strategy, combining online platforms with select offline opportunities. She plans to relaunch direct-to-consumer sales with a focus on ready-to-wear collections, offering modern interpretations of traditional crafts.

Collaboration and Fair Practices

“At Weaves of Tradition, our commitment is towards celebrating Indian crafts while creating a sustainable business model. We prioritize collaboration with craftspeople who practice their art with authenticity and dedication. By engaging directly with these talented individuals, we ensure their craftsmanship is respected and valued,” Madhuri explained.

Paying fair prices is integral to their approach. “We believe in creating a sustainable business model that fairly compensates artisans for their work. This ensures that they can continue to practice their craft and sustain their livelihoods while contributing to the growth of Weaves of Tradition.”

She further emphasized their dedication to sustainability, noting, “Indian crafts are intrinsically eco-friendly, and this is one of the major aspects of sustainable fashion that most fashion brands are now starting to adopt. This holistic approach helps us maintain a balance between economic viability and ethical responsibility, ensuring a better future for the artisans and the fashion industry.”

Closing the Loop: Advice for Entrepreneurs

Reflecting on her journey, Madhuri offered valuable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Persistence is key,” she said, emphasizing the importance of resilience and the willingness to handle repetitive, behind-the-scenes tasks that form the backbone of any business. She also stressed the value of networking, citing her plans to connect with other D2C founders and explore synergies in the ecosystem.

Conclusion

Madhuri Aggarwal’s journey with Weaves of Tradition is a story of transformation, resilience, and the celebration of heritage. From her legal roots to her entrepreneurial success, she has carved a niche by blending tradition with innovation. Her dedication to fair practices, sustainability, and contemporary design is a shining example for entrepreneurs seeking to create meaningful impact. As Madhuri continues to expand her brand’s horizons, her story is sure to inspire many more to follow their passion and make a difference.
