Pioneering a Future of Clean Air
In an insightful conversation with Sandhya Bharti, Deputy Editor at Indian Startup Times, Ravi Kaushik, CEO and Founder of Airth, shared his journey of transforming air purification technology. With a background in Environmental Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra and IIT Bombay, Ravi’s vision for Airth was born out of a deep concern for the rising air pollution levels and the need for effective, accessible solutions.
The Birth of Airth: From Vision to Innovation
Airth was founded in 2020, rooted in Ravi’s extensive research and an entrepreneurship fellowship with Social Alpha under Tata Trusts and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Understanding the dire need for air purification, he set out to create groundbreaking solutions that go beyond conventional air purifiers.
Airth’s breakthrough came through its innovative antimicrobial air purification technology, developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay. The startup secured early clients such as the RBI headquarters and Stockholding Corporation of India. However, realizing the limitations of standalone air purifiers, Airth pivoted towards integrating purification technology directly into air conditioners (ACs), a revolutionary approach that set them apart globally.
Scaling Innovation: The AC-Integrated Purification Model
The shift to AC-integrated air purifiers was a game-changer. Within just eight months, Airth expanded from 1,000 units to over 30,000 units in two years, catching the attention of major investors, including Shark Tank India’s Aman Gupta and Vinita Singh.
“Our goal has always been to make clean air a reality,” Ravi stated. “By integrating purification technology into existing AC systems, we ensure affordability and convenience for consumers.”
Tackling Market Challenges and Driving Awareness
Airth faced initial resistance due to widespread consumer misconceptions. Many believed that air conditioners alone could purify indoor air, diminishing the perceived need for additional purification technology. To address this, Airth launched awareness campaigns and educational videos to inform consumers about the importance of integrated air purification.
Ravi highlighted a critical learning: “Innovation alone doesn’t drive adoption. Convenience and affordability play an equally important role.”
The Road Ahead: Expansion and Sustainability
Looking to the future, Airth aims to venture into commercial and automotive air purification, ensuring clean air in offices, malls, and vehicles. Sustainability remains at the core of their mission, with efforts focused on minimizing plastic waste by enhancing existing AC systems instead of manufacturing entirely new devices.
For aspiring hardware startup founders, Ravi’s advice is clear: “Be prepared for at least two to three years without profits.” His emphasis on patience and resilience underscores the challenges of building a hardware-based business.
Conclusion: A Breath of Fresh Air
With a mission-driven approach, Airth is not just revolutionizing air purification but also shaping a sustainable future. As the company continues to grow, its unwavering commitment to combating pollution and climate change remains steadfast. Stay tuned for more updates on Airth’s journey as they redefine the way we breathe—one purified breath at a time.
